The Ancient World Online: Çukuriçi Höyük 6: Prehistoric Textile Production in the Context of Western Anatolia, the Aegean and Bulgaria

Çukuriçi Höyük 6

Based on research on Çukuriçi Höyük, a prehistoric tell settlement on the western Anatolian Aegean coast, this volume is dedicated to the analysis of textile processing technology. Due to the chronological depth, the geographical location and the excavations carried out using the most modern methods, this site represents the ideal basis for the diachronic study of prehistoric textile technologies in Anatolia and the Aegean as well as in neighboring areas. Chronologically, the studies begin at the beginning of the settlement of Çukuriçi Höyük in the 7th millennium BC. BC and go slightly beyond the final phase of the settlement until the end of the 3rd millennium BC. The often ignored everyday crafts serve as a starting point for analyzing the spread of technologies and the associated social systems. In order to shed light on the complex connections, textile devices (spindle whorls and weaving weights) from various sites in Greece, Bulgaria and western Turkey were recorded and evaluated using analytical-statistical methods. The results of these studies were interpreted using different socio-ecological models. The studies provide information about how widespread technological transfer took place and what social factors accompanied it. Due to the structured approach using statistical methods and model interpretations, the study offers a sound basis on which future studies can build. Textile archeology opens up new perspectives on the cultural dynamics and exchange of innovations in prehistoric Anatolia.
