The Ancient World Online: Land in Roman Gaul: Status of the land and men

What is archeology for? Do the material data it provides make it possible to answer historical questions regarding the status of people and property, for periods and/or geographical areas where textual or epigraphic documentation is lacking? It is this challenge that this work tackles: what was the status of the lands and the protagonists, from a land point of view, in the campaigns of the Roman provinces of Gaul, at the end of the 2nde pp. of n. è. au VIe S. de n. eh. ?

The situation is first examined for the entire Roman world, through classic data from texts and inscriptions, better represented for example in Italy or Roman Africa, allowing us to observe the status of land in terms of male owners and workers), of the “model(s)” of the land domain. Then we endeavor to see the concordances and possible differences observable throughout the rural world of Gaul and Germania, in the light of the rarest written data, but above all, in detail, archaeological data of all kinds – abundantly illustrated –, likely, in a more or less indirect way, to shed light on the question.
